NORTHAMPTON – For those with a shirt, backpack, lamp, or another household item that is in need of repair, the Northampton Department of Public Works might have a solution.

On March 23, the Northampton DPW and the city’s ReUse Committee is hosting a “Community RePair” workshop from noon to 4 p.m. at the Smith Vocational High School cafeteria. Workshop organizers are inviting the public to bring in items in need of repair for a crew of “handy” fix-it volunteers to attempt to fix them, free of charge.

Sewing equipment, bicycles, and other small appliances can also be repaired. A list of “fix-it” skills available at the event are listed on the city’s website. Knife and gardening tool sharpening will also be available, with a limit of two items per customer.

A “Take-apart Table” demonstration will give attendees the opportunity to learn about the inner workings of common appliances. Attendees will also be shown how to make a reusable tote bag out of discarded materials.

A button-sewing demonstration will take place at 2 p.m., and a lamp repair demonstration at 3 p.m.
