AMHERST — A man was rescued by emergency workers after falling through the ice at Puffer’s Pond on Monday evening.

Capt. Chris Bascomb of the Fire Department said a passer-by heard the man’s shouts for help just before 7 p.m., and reported the incident to authorities. He was about 20 feet from shore in water roughly 15 feet deep when emergency workers rescued him with a rope, Bascomb said.

The man was taken to Cooley Dickinson Hospital and is in stable condition, according to Bascomb.

“There are sections of ice obviously — he managed to walk out on one — but it’s melting quickly,” Bascomb said of the pond’s conditions. He cautioned that people should stay off the water at all times.
