Cโ€™s ban fan accused of racist comment

BOSTON (AP) โ€” The Boston Celtics have banned a fan from its games for two years for being verbally abusive toward the Warriors during their only visit to Boston this season.

The team says it didnโ€™t enforce a lifetime ban because its investigation couldnโ€™t prove that the fan used a racial slur toward Golden State forward DeMarcus Cousins.

According to a Yahoo! report, Cousins said the fan โ€œmutteredโ€ a racial slur at him on Jan. 26.

The Celtics say the fan, who is a minor, was ejected from the game immediately after they received the complaint. The team says it reviewed videotape and spoke with fans, police and security in the area and concluded the fan was verbally abusive toward the Golden State bench.

The investigation found that โ€œnone of the interviewed parties were able to verify the use of racially offensive language, and video evidence proved inconclusive.โ€

Heisman winner Joe Bellino, 81, dies

BOSTON (AP) โ€” The New England Patriots say Heisman Trophy winner Joe Bellino has died.

Bellino died on Thursday at the age of 81. Neither the team nor the Heisman Trophy Trust, which reported the death on its website, specified a cause of death.

The Navy halfback was nicknamed the โ€œWinchester Rifle,โ€ after his suburban Boston hometown. In 1960 he became the first Navy player to win the Heisman. Bellino served 28 years in the Navy and Naval Reserves and reached the rank of Captain before retiring.

Bellino was drafted by Washington of the NFL and the Boston Patriots of the AFL. After serving his military commitment, he played three seasons with the Patriots, mostly as a kick returner.

He was also offered a contract by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of high school.

Yawkey name pulled from train station

BOSTON (AP) โ€” First it was a street outside Fenway Park, now the name of former longtime Boston Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey is being removed from a commuter rail station.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority said Thursday that Yawkey Station, used by many fans attending games at Fenway, will be renamed Landsdowne Station before the teamโ€™s April 9 home opener.

Under Yawkey, the Red Sox were the last major league team to field a black player, leading to allegations of racism. Yawkey died in 1976.

The city last year changed the name of Yawkey Way to Jersey Street at the request of current team owner John Henry.

In announcing the change , the MBTA made no reference to controversy surrounding Yawkeyโ€™s ownership, citing instead its policy of emphasizing local geography in naming stations.
