NORTHAMPTON — Police are investigating the discovery of a woman’s body on the Northampton side of the Connecticut River near the Norwottuck Rail Trail bridge that connects to Hadley.

The body of the woman, believed to be in her 40s, was found Thursday morning and Northampton police at the scene said the death is not considered suspicious.

Police shut down access to the rail trail bridge on both ends as well as to the parking lot of the Elwell Recreation Area off Damon Road. The body was removed from the scene shortly before noon. Northampton and Massachusetts State Police were also seen searching a late-model Jeep Renegade in the parking lot.

The Northwestern district attorney’s office said the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.
