A March 27 letter, “Science helps dupe people about climate change,” is too clever by half.

His anti-climate change source, Dr. Richard Lindzen, formerly of MIT and now at the Cato Institute, has been taken to task by 22 of his former colleagues who wrote, “As (Lindzen’s) colleagues at MIT in the Program in Atmospheres, Oceans and Climate, all of whom are actively involved in understanding climate, we write to make it clear that this is not a view shared by us, or by the overwhelming majority of other scientists who have devoted their professional lives to careful study of climate science.”

Further refuting the climate contrarian Lindzen’s views, his former colleagues also stated, “The risks to the Earth system associated with increasing levels of carbon dioxide are almost universally agreed by climate scientists to be real ones … including, but … not limited to, sea level rise, ocean acidification, and increases in extreme flooding and droughts, all with serious consequences for mankind.” (Inside Climate News).

It is Lindzen, Donald Trump’s malicious minions, and the spread of troglodytic views like the letter writer in the Gazette that are attempting to dupe people into going quietly into a global catastrophe for homo sapiens. We should all be thankful for — and supportive of — the young people, scientists, and other advocates of a Green New Deal.

The writer may well live long enough to experience the scope of the calamity that he now sees as a hoax sold by scientists. But in a radically overheated world it will be cold comfort to hear him say that he was mistaken in his attack on science, or that he regrets his small contribution to the biological and existential suffering of all our children and grandchildren.
