UMass coach Greg Carvel was named the winner of the 2019 Spencer Penrose Award as Division I Men’s Ice Hockey CCM/AHCA Coach of the Year.

UMass (30-9-0) is nearing the end of an historic season. The Minutemen will play Denver in their first Frozen Four, Thursday in Buffalo, New York.

AIC coach Eric Lang was runner-up in the award.

Women’s lacrosse

Amherst 18, Connecticut College 6 — Isabella Sennett (two assists) and Annie Cohen (assist) each had four goals, while Katherine Malone added three tallies as the Mammoths (8-3, 4-3 NESCAC) rolled on the road.

Men’s lacrosse

Amherst 23, Connecticut College 8 — Evan Wolf had six goals and two assists, while Colin Minicus had five goals and six assists as the Mammoths (11-1, 6-1 NESCAC) cruised at home.

Jon Coffey added three goals in the win.

Women’s tennis

Mount Holyoke 7, Springfield 2 — The Lyons (9-8, 2-3 NEWMAC) took two of three doubles matches and five of six singles to win at home.

Women’s basketball

Mount Holyoke senior Zahkeyah Allen has been named to the United States Olympic Committee’s Finding Leaders Among Minorities Everywhere (FLAME) program.

The FLAME program provides diverse college and graduate-level students with a unique look into the world of elite sport.

EmPOWER Conference

Former US Olympian Tamika Catchings will deliver the opening keynote address at Smith College’s EmPOWER: Understanding Our Identities Conference. The Conference will take place on Sunday, from noon to 6 p.m. in Weinstein Auditorium. The conference focuses on inclusion and diversity within athletics and is open to all NEWMAC and Seven Sisters Institutions.

Registration will open at 11 a.m. in the front lobby of Weinstein Auditorium in Wright Hall.

Wrestling

The late Homer Barr will be inducted into the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, Saturday at Gillette Stadium.

Barr coached UMass from 1966 until he died from cancer in 1975. He took over a fledgling program and turned it into New England champions in 1971, 1973 and 1974.

Barr also advanced the sport in the state. He arranged for local high schools to use UMass’ facilities. Barr hosted the 1970 High School New England Tournament, as well as offseason clinics and tournaments.
