The South Hadley girls tennis team received the top seed in the Western Massachusetts Division 3 Tournament.
The Tigers finished 15-2 and edged undefeated Lee (15-0) in the Walker Ratings, 114.27 to 110.26.
“It really doesn’t matter because you never know,” South Hadley coach Eric Cestero said. “You never know how the other teams are going to turn out. Everyone wants to win.”
South Hadley will host No. 8 St. Mary’s (6-10) in the quarterfinal round, Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Lee will host No. 7 Mount Everett (9-9) on Tuesday.
South Hadley and Lee held the same seeds last season, with the Wildcats beating the Tigers, 4-1, in the championship.
“It really doesn’t matter who you are paying again,” Cestero said. “The key opponent in tennis is the ball. That’s who you are playing against.”
Pope Francis (13-1) received the third seed in the eight-team bracket.
In Division 1, Belchertown (12-7) is the fourth seed and will host No. 5 Minnechaug (9-7) in the quarterfinals of the seven-team tournament, Monday at 3:30.
The Orioles beat the Falcons, 3-2, on May 1.
In the boys Division 3 tournament, defending champion South Hadley is the fifth seed at 10-7 and will play at No. 4 Lee (7-4) in the quarterfinals of the six-team field, Tuesday at 3:30.
Belchertown (14-5) is seeded third and will host No. 6 Mount Everett (7-7), Tuesday at 3:30.
The No. 6 Frontier Regional girls team (9-5) will visit No. 2 Greenfield (11-4), Tuesday at 3:30.
Frontier doesn’t have a boys program so boys are allowed to play for the girls team. If the boys didn’t play in the postseason, the Red Hawks could compete in the girls tournament. However, the team elected to compete with a full lineup so by MIAA rule, it must play in the boys tournament.
Turners Falls (13-3) is the top seed in the field and will host either Lee or South Hadley on Thursday.
In Division 1, prohibitive favorite Longmeadow (14-1) is seeded first.
Central (13-2) is second followed by Amherst Regional (9-3).
The Hurricanes will host No. 6 Chicopee Comp (8-5) in the quarterfinals of the nine-team tournament, Tuesday at 3:30.
Northampton (9-7) is fifth and will visit No. 4 East Longmeadow (13-3), Tuesday at 4. The Blue Devils and Spartans split during the season, either winning 3-2 at home.
The Granby girls lacrosse team earned the sixth seed in the Central/West Division 2 Tournament.
The Rams (12-6) will host Blackstone Valley in the first round of the 13-team field. The winner advances to play at No. 3 Auburn (14-4).
Granby and Blackstone did not play during the season.
Belchertown (12-4) is the eighth seed and will host No. 9 Chicopee Comp (14-6) in the first round. The winner plays at No. 1 Bromfield (16-2).
The Orioles and Colts split during the season. Belchertown won on the road, 13-12, and lost at home, 11-10.
In the boys Central/West Division 3 tournament, Belchertown (13-5) earned the ninth seed and will visit No. 8 Nipmuc (9-9) in the opening round. The teams did not play this season. The winner will visit No. 1 Grafton.
South Hadley (9-9) drew the 11th seed and will visit No. 6 Hoosac Valley (12-6). The teams did not play this season. The winner will face either No. 14 McCann Tech or No. 9 St. Bernard’s.
Dates and times of all lacrosse games were not available.
