Like raw sewage, raw noise should not be released into the Earth’s atmosphere. There is a wealth of scientific documentation on the distress, the disruption, and the destruction of the life patterns it causes to all living creatures.

I regularly walk through and across the UMass campus. Almost never am I out of earshot of the relentless polyphony of ventilation machinery. Maintenance vehicles are so intolerably noisy that the drivers wear ear muffs.

UMass has received well-deserved accolades for its large and laudable steps towards a greener Earth — now it’s time for it to turn its attention to the far too-generous contribution it is making to noise pollution.
