NORTHAMPTON – A 26-year-old Springfield man was sentenced to three years in state prison on a cocaine trafficking charge in Hampshire Superior Court on Tuesday.

Calvin Robert Medina, 26, pleaded guilty to a charge of trafficking 18 grams or more of cocaine but less than 36 grams. He had earlier been indicted on trafficking 36 grams or more of cocaine but less than 100 grams.

Medina was given credit for 99 days served.

Assistant District Attorney Jayme Parent said in court that Massachusetts State Police stopped a vehicle that Median was driving on July 15, 2018, on Route 5 in Haydenville. Medina was found to have a learners permit but no valid driver’s license, while two passengers had suspended driver’s licenses.

Police searched the vehicle prior to a tow and found three sandwich bags in a black sock that was believed to be cocaine. Medina and the passengers were arrested and read their Miranda rights, with Medina saying, “It’s mine. It’s on me,” Parent said in court.

The total weight of the bags, which tested positive for cocaine, was 73 grams, and Medina was found with a small container of cocaine when he was booked, Parent said.

The guilty plea was accepted by Judge Richard Carey, who also agreed to recommend that Medina serve his sentence at the Franklin County House of Correction, where he has been detained.
