Chinese charter graduate lands scholarship

HADLEY — Xueqin Li of Amherst, a 2019 graduate of the Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School, recently received the 2019 Future Leader Scholarship in the amount of $2,500 from the Boston chapter of The National Association of Asian American Professionals Boston Chapter.

This scholarship is awarded to outstanding high school seniors who have demonstrated leadership qualities in and out of the classroom.

SOUTHAMPTON — Edwards Public Library will host a summer reading program Thursday in which children can learning about the solar system.

Alfred Venne from Amherst College will lead the “Universe’s Story,” from 4 to 5 p.m., for ages 7 & up.

Chinese charterannounces winners of Junior Awards

HADLEY — Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School in Hadley recently held its annual high school Book Awards Ceremony.

Nine students either received college book awards or certificates of achievement. Some of these awards include the potential for scholarships from the sponsoring institutions, should the recipient become an accepted student at that institution the following year and meet certain academic requirements.

The students chosen to receive the college awards are young scholars and leaders that have met the criteria set out by each respective institution.

The following are the recipients: Anabelle Mandel, Mount Holyoke Book Award and University of Rochester’s Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award; Sarah Fitts, George Washington University and University of Rochester’s George Eastman Young Leaders Award; Mary Fitts, Wesleyan University Award; Madeline Jaczsyn, Bryn Mawr College President’s Book Award; Katherine Nessel, Rensselaer Math and Science Medal Award and University of Rochester’s Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award; Hannah Kochis, Dartmouth Book Award and St. Michael’s Book Award for Academic Achievement with a Social Conscience; Noah Speek, Williams College Book Award and St. Michael’s Book Award for Academic Achievement with a Social Conscience; Sara Wong, Smith College Book Award; and Morgan Kochis, St. Lawrence University Book Award.

Free meals in Northampton and Amherst

Three sites in Northampton and nine sites in Amherst will give free meals to young people 18 and under through a federal summer food service program. 

“Summer can be an incredibly stressful time for families who rely on school meals to feed their children,” Erin McAleer, president of Project Bread, an anti-hunger group involved in the program in Northampton, said in a press release.

Starting July 1, the Northampton locations and times are as follows:

■Meadowbrook Apartments Community Room, 491 Bridge Road, Florence. Lunch: Daily 12-1 p.m.; Snack: 3:30 p.m.

■RKF Ryan Road School, 498 Ryan Road, Florence. Lunch: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 11:30-12 p.m.

■Florence Heights Apartments, 98 Florence Heights, Florence. Lunch: Tuesday and Thursday 11:30-12 p.m.

Amherst meals are Monday through Friday until August 23. The locations and times are as follows:

■Boys and Girls Club, 29 A Cottage Street, Amherst, 2-2:30 p.m.

■Mill River Recreation Area, 95 Montague Road, Amherst, 2:45-3:15

■North Village Apartments, 990 N. Pleasant Street, Amherst, 3:25-3:40 p.m.
