WILLIAMSBURG — The fire department responded to an oven malfunction on Tuesday morning at the Dunkin’ Donuts located at 142 Main St. in Haydenville.
There was no damage to the building and no one was injured, said Williamsburg Deputy Fire Chief Daryl Springman. The malfunction and resulting smoke created a bad smell which caused the building to need ventilation, but the restaurant is expected to reopen later in the day, Springman said.
“It wasn’t a major incident or anything like that,” Springman said.
According to Springman, the cause of the malfunction was internal to the oven, and he said surrounding appliances were untouched.
Arya Odunukwe, 20, a shift manager at the store working during the incident, said the staff was in the middle of a rush of customers when a sausage, egg and cheese wrap she put in the oven sparked up. There was a short-lived, small fire in the oven, she said, which then emitted smoke.
“I put the wrap in, it was cooking for five seconds, I saw a spark and then a flame at the bottom of the oven,” she said. “I was like, ‘Okay, everybody needs to get out.’”
The oven had immediately turned off, according to Odunukwe, and the store will likely need a replacement oven.
