NORTHAMPTON — Damage to a water main resulting from road work closed a portion of Bridge Road for two hours on Wednesday afternoon.
Around 11 a.m., the water main near 580 Bridge Road was damaged during excavation related to a reconstruction project on the street, said Department of Public Works Director Donna LaScaleia in an email. There were no injuries, she said.
Water service was briefly interrupted for Bridge Road residents while public works water division crews from the DPW fixed the break, she said. From 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Bridge Road was completely closed to all traffic between Hatfield and Chestnut streets, she said.
“The reason we communicated it as an emergency was because it was an unanticipated event,” LaScaleia said.
According to LaScaleia, the issue has been resolved and one lane will remain closed for the rest of Wednesday afternoon. Police, she said, remained on scene to coordinate two-way alternating traffic.
