With the recent back and forth in these pages over the use of “they” as a singular pronoun, I ask grammar prescriptivists whether their rigid application of “the rules” is truly in line with their values. Rejecting a person’s choice of pronouns rejects their identity.

Furthermore, the whole idea that one way of speaking is correct and all others are not devalues regional and ethnic dialects, English language learners, and those without the means or opportunity to attain the same level of education as those judging them.
