Florence Road, Easthampton
This is one of 12 images I made in the span of about 30 seconds. We were on Florence Road, near Heritage Farm. The sky was unbelievably wonderful, and I did what I call a “rideby capture.” My husband, a photojournalist, was driving. Keeping his eyes on the road, he coaches me on when the view will likely be unobstructed. At about 35 mph with trees, mailboxes, and houses flying in and out of the view, the motion factor can lend an otherworldly quality. At times objects in the foreground blur in unusual ways. Other times, as in this photo, one wouldn’t exactly notice the motion. I do feel the image is somehow always affected by the movement, though. I do love to stop, get out into nature and compose with care. Other times, the movement, lighting, and decisive moment come together as I’m just riding along.
