If it isn’t too politically incorrect, I would like to posit that your Aug. 30 guest columnist, David Zimicki (“The sovietization of America”) may have suffered from a similar affliction to the one listed as his life’s work, that of treating traumatic brain injuries.

He seems to have been traumatized to the McCarthyite assertion about “communists under every bedsheet.” What a way to go about besmirching your political opponents — by tarring them with the worst example that human experience and history can provide.

I’m not saying that the left doesn’t engage in similar tactics, but if we are going to constructively confront the existential dilemmas of our time, we must do better than the smear that Mr. Zimicki just put to print.
