Olivia Vecellio joined an exclusive club on Monday.
The Frontier Regional senior midfielder scored two goals, the second coming on a penalty corner in the second half that accounted for the 100th point of her career.
Vecellio’s milestone put the exclamation mark on a 4-0 victory over Westfield in a Valley League contest in South Deerfield.
“That was just the cherry on top,” said Vecellio of scoring a goal for point No. 100. “But I was excited either way, whether it was an assist or a goal. It wasn’t just a ‘me’ thing. I couldn’t have done it without my teammates. They had to score goals for me to get an assist, they had to pass me the ball to score goals.”
Vecellio became the first Frontier player to score 100 points since 2004, when Erin Parker accomplished the feat for a team that reached the state championship game.
“Just to see Liv blossom since coming into the program as an eighth grader, it’s awesome,” Frontier head coach Missy Mahar said. “It’s a credit to what she’s put into it over the years. She’s put in a ton of hard work and really is dedicated to the sport. It’s a great milestone for her.”
Vecellio entered the season with 96 career points. While reaching 100 was a big first goal, she and the Red Hawks have a lot more on the list moving forward.
“We’re in it for the long haul,” she said. “Winning Western Mass., that’s obviously the big goal but we’ve got a long way to go until then. Right now, it’s just game by game, looking forward to each day and trying to get better.”
Vecellio said former teammate Jordyn Roberts was the first person to mention the 100-point mark, back when Vecellio was just an eighth grader in 2015. That fall, Roberts, who was a senior, told a wide-eyed Vecellio that she was going to one day accomplish the feat.
“I texted (Roberts) today, she’s down in Florida at school, and told her I only needed two more points so it’s kind of cool to think back to that conversation a long time ago,” Vecellio said.
Frontier (2-0, 1-0) came to life in the second half against Westfield, as Vecellio netted both of her goals after intermission. Lila Roche and Alyson Barnes also tallied in the victory, while Rebecca Wallace-West notched two assists and Grace Wesoloski also had an assist.
Skyla Burniske and Ella Flanders each made a save in net to pitch the shutout, as the Hawks held a decisive 21-2 edge in shots on goal and a 13-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Minnechaug 4, Northampton 1 — Emily Sledzieski scored 15:29 into the second half to tie the game for the Blue Devils. The Falcons scored the next three to put the game away.
Ella Moreau saved five shots for the Blue Devils (0-2-1, 0-2 Suburban).
Belchertown 10, Pioneer Regional 0 — The Orioles (2-0-1, 2-0 Tri-County) dominated as Abigail Olden’s four goals and assist led the way at home.
Hailey Boutin scored two goals and had one assist. Kaleigh Cooper, Ashley Messier, Faith Cass and Bella St. George each contributed a goal. Elyssa Wrona also contributed an assist to Belchertown’s efforts. Eliza Rothstein made one save.
