NORTHAMPTON – Two people were hospitalized with injuries in two separate crashes involving three vehicles on I-91 northbound Sunday night, according to Massachusetts State Police.
Police said that around 9:35 p.m., a 19-year-old from Hartford, Connecticut, driving a 2004 Ford Focus, struck the guardrail near exit 18, causing him to crash in the median.
A 52-year-old man and a 19-year-old passenger, both of Greenfield, stopped in a 2011 Acura MDX on the left side shoulder of the highway to assist the driver who had crashed. When both people exited the car, the 19-year-old was struck by a 35-year-old Agawam woman driving a 2016 Chevy Malibu traveling northbound.
The driver of the Ford Focus was taken to Cooley Dickinson Hospital with minor injuries while the 19-year-old passenger who was struck by the Chevy Malibu was taken to Baystate Medical Center with serious injuries. The two other drivers were uninjured.
Police have not released information related to the causes of the crashes or the identities of the people involved. No charges have been filed.
The crash remains under investigation with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and Crime Scene Services Section.
