The Mideast is heading for a major regional conflict and President Donald Trump has absolutely no idea how to respond. His talk of the United States being “locked and loaded” in response to the devastating strike on the Saudi oil facility is nothing more than talk — the bluster of a man who is unwilling to face the gravity of the situation he has stumbled into.
One big problem for the U.S. is that the days are long gone when we could lob cruise missiles into other peoples’ countries with impunity. With the rapid spread of advanced targeting technology and the rise of drones, Iran could close the Gulf of Hormuz or do severe damage to a U.S. naval vessel in response. Maybe even sink one.
Iran will not sit idly and allow the U.S. to conduct air strikes at will. They will not fight symmetrically. They will hit us where we aren’t. Trump is about to find out that the military might of the U.S. has been undermined by the absence of a coherent foreign policy and strong multilateral agreements. And it’s all his fault. No one else bears the blame for this fiasco.
