CUMMINGTON — Fire crews from multiple towns responded to a fire that leveled a garage on Plainfield Road early Thursday morning.
Fire Chief Adam Dragon said crews were called to 133 Plainfield Road around 1:50 a.m. for a fire contained to a garage/workshop on the property.
Dragon said the cause of the fire is still being looked into but he believes that a wood-burning appliance may have been involved.
“There were four other structures on the property Dragon said. “This was the only building to sustain damage and there were no injuries.”
According to Dragon, firefighters were on the scene until roughly 6 a.m. Mutual aid was provided by Worthington, Plainfield and Ashfield
“We had excellent help from our partners,” he said.
Sydney O’Leary, who lives in the house with homeowner Ron Wolf, described the building that burned as a workshop that was also used to store family memorabilia.
“I woke up around 1:30 and saw the fire and I’m still a little foggy and shaken about the whole thing,” O’Leary said.
Next to the garage/workshop is a large barn with cows and pigs.
“At least they saved our other buildings, and all of our animals are safe,” she said. “The fire department did a wonderful job.”
“This is a tragedy for us,” O’Leary said. “We lost a lot of stuff a lot of family things like photos and yearbooks and antiques.”
O’Leary said that she had no idea what the estimated financial loss will be.
