Welcome to the Pioneer Valley, Ms. Nordstrom (“When the moral high groud clouds your vision!,” Nov. 21). I have a practical reply to your inability to cook with gas in Holyoke — an induction stove. Many people have learned to love it and you can too. It is extremely efficient and safe — no flames, and quick. (In one test, .75 L water boiled in 4 minutes, versus 7 minutes for electric, and 8 minutes for gas.)
You do need stainless steel cookware, but my cheap carbon steel flat bottom wok makes terrific stir fries with real sizzle.
I’m willing to make some sacrifices for the planet. That includes extra cozy and fashionable layers in the winter to keep warm, instead of upping the thermostat. I am not using my gas fireplace as much. Less sitting, more doing — hoping for good cross country skiing this season.
Instead of moral high grounds, let’s learn from and support each other in the complex calculus of carbon emissions. And learn about H2810, a carbon pricing and rebate bill in Massachusetts that will address the real cost of carbon to our health and environment. We have to cut carbon, and transition to real renewable energy.
It’s a climate emergency and we can’t wait! We need everyone on board looking for solutions, and a little empathy.
