NORTHAMPTON — A storm is set to cover Hampshire County with its first widespread, accumulating snowfall, with eight to 12 inches of snow anticipated between early Sunday afternoon and Tuesday morning.

“Overall, it looks like an impactful event,” said Rodney Chai, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Norton, Massachusetts. “This is also going to be the first widespread accumulating snowfall event of the season, so coupled with the post-Thanksgiving travel and people getting back to work, it might catch some people off-guard.”

Hampshire County will mostly see snow, Chai said on Friday afternoon, with a possible period of sleet on Monday. Eastern portions of the state will likely see a rain-snow mix.

Snowfall will likely be continuous over the days, he said, although there may be some breaks in between.

Temperatures will fluctuate between the mid-20s and mid-30s during the storm, according to NWS forecasts, and snowfall will likely be heaviest on Monday, with 3 to 7 inches anticipated.

Chai encouraged people to continue checking weather forecasts as the storm approaches, as some predictions may change.
