HOLYOKE — Firefighters responded to a porch fire at 295 Beech St. on Wednesday night that was caused by improper disposal of smoking materials.

The three-story, four-family house was occupied when the fire began, but all residents were able to evacuate with no injuries reported, according to the Holyoke Fire Department. When firefighters responded to the scene around 5:30 p.m., they found flames on the third floor exterior porch.

“The flames were quickly extinguished and the wall opened to check for extension,” Fire Capt. Kevin Cavagnac said in a statement. “The fire affected only the exterior.”

Officials determined that the cause of the fire was improper disposal of smoking materials, Cavagnac said. Residents were able to return to their homes later that evening.

An improperly disposed cigarette was also the cause of a fire that destroyed a two-story home at 68 Fairfield Avenue in late September.
