Debra Allen, the author of the “No Xmas, please” letter on Dec. 27, and probably many other people too, might be less bothered by the use of the short word “Xmas” as an alternative to “Christmas” if she knew that the X in “Xmas” has been a legitimate abbreviation for “Christ” ever since the Greek version of the name first came into use 2000 years ago.
