I have been enjoying the Northampton Senior Center since moving here 13 years ago. I have attended exercise classes, bridge and social events. I’ve also helped plan events.

During this time, I have noticed the difference in the leadership style of the directors. It has been noted that the current director is difficult to work with, can be autocratic and some of the seniors say they feel as if they are being treated like children.

Having worked for much of my career in the public school system, I have also observed that the principal sets the tone for the entire school and its atmosphere and whether it’s a happy place or not. Likewise, the director of the Senior Center is in a similar position of that of a principal in a school or even a manager in an office. Management style and personality are not easily exchanged. If you want a change in the leadership, change the leader. Do not expect the leader to change.
