The Frontier Regional wrestling team defeated Franklin Tech, 48-30, on the road Wednesday, benefiting from six forfeits compared to just three for the Eagles.
The teams were tied 12-12 in the four matches wrestled.
“We were lucky that the forfeitures fell in our favor,” Frontier coach Don Gordon said.
At 182 pounds, Frontier’s KC Mattson looked like he had Eagle senior Ethan Courchesne pinned late in the first period.
Mattson had Courchesne at the end of the mat, and was about to get the pin when the buzzer rang to signal the end of the period.
“I was a little disappointed but the ref talked to us about sportsmanship,” Mattson said. “You have to respect the call. It motivated me. Experience comes into play, too. You can’t let your emotions get the best of you.”
The great thing about wrestling is there’s little time to dwell, as the second period started within seconds of the first.
Mattson jumped out and eventually got the pin 48 seconds into the frame.
The first match of the night went to Frontier’s Payton Sladeski at 106, pinning Will Rosenberg 42 seconds into the second period.
The Red Hawks won via forfeit at 113, 145, 152, 160, 170 and 285, while the Eagles won by forfeiture at 126, 132 and 220. Neither team had a 120 wrestler.
