What do you say when your 14-year-old grandson says, “Will I be drafted into World War III?” All I could say was, “I hope there is no World War III.”

What do you say when a young person at your church comes to the microphone to pray for peace and to pray that he won’t have to fight in the Middle East? I didn’t know what to say. It seemed inadequate to say, “I called my elected officials and I’m going to a demonstration against war on Iran.”

What I wish I could have said is, “This country will never be involved in a World War III because we have cut our military budget drastically. We no longer want to be the world’s greatest military power. The Green New Deal has made it no longer necessary for us to meddle in the Middle East to protect our source of oil. Our Peace Department is working tirelessly with our own citizens and with other nations in forging peace and creating a sustainable way of life.”

Until I can say that, I will call my elected officials, go to peace demonstrations and try desperately to think of other ways to bring about peace and sustainability.
