The Amherst College women’s basketball team trailed Wesleyan by six with less than nine minutes left, but it held the Cardinals to one point down the stretch en route to a 53-49 victory, Friday in Middletown, Connecticut.

The Mammoths trailed 48-42 following two Emma Roush free throws with 8:49 left.

Amherst’s offense struggled as well, but Maggie Shipley pulled the hosts within 48-45 with a three-point play at the 3:28 mark.

Hannah Fox buried a 3-pointer with 1:40 left to tie the game.

Katy O’Connor (Southampton) gave Wesleyan a 49-48 lead with a free throw with 42 seconds left, but Fox went 4-for-4 from the line and Madeline Eck made one over the final 25 seconds to cap the comeback.

Fox finished with 20 points. Eck had 16 and Shipley 11 for Amherst (17-3, 4-2 NESCAC).

O’Connor started and had five points and six rebounds in 27 minutes for the Cardinals (11-8, 1-4).

Men’s basketball

Amherst 75, Wesleyan 52 — Garrett Day hit seven 3-pointers en route to 28 points as the Mammoths (14-6, 4-2 NESCAC) pulled away at LeFrak Gymnasium.

Michael Schretter added 13 points in the win.

Men’s hockey

Amherst 2, Trinity 1 — Stephen Rex and Patrick Daly scored third-period goals as the Mammoths (6-9-2, 4-6-1 NESCAC) rallied on the road.

Giancarlo Ventre made 35 saves in the win.

Women’s hockey

Amherst 2, Wesleyan 0 — Kate Pohl scored in the second period and Kenzie MacDonald added en empty-net goal as the Mammoths (10-4-4, 5-3-3 NESCAC) won at Orr Rink.

Caitlin Walker made 11 saves in the shutout.
