The time is now to consider preschool options for September enrollment. We are fortunate to have many great programs in Northampton and a new city grant, the Community Preschool Partnership Initiative, is expanding those even further.

Here are a few aspects to consider, as a bit of legwork ahead of submitting applications can go a long way in ensuring a solid program match for your family.

Price

Itโ€™s important to look beyond the sticker price as sliding scales, financial aid and grant-funded programs can adjust what a family will pay out of pocket. Child care payments can be eligible for a tax deduction.

When calling an early childhood program be sure to ask what the program cost is, what aid is available and what other fees may exist (before and after school programs, vacation care, etc.). Come tax season, be sure to learn which child care fees can be claimed as tax-deductible.

Proximity

Location and transportation are critical considerations. Is the school on a public transit route, is it walkable/bikeable, does the program provide its own transportation? Is it close to home, or would it be better to have a child spend their days closer to your work location? Some families are comfortable with longer commutes, others prefer a location that fits seamlessly into their established routine.

Program

Preschool programs are licensed in Massachusetts by various state agencies. In addition, programs may also have certifications specific to their programโ€™s curriculum. Ask the programs to share their philosophy of educating young children. Does it inspire you, align with your parenting and or provide balance to what you offer at home?

To find the right program match, engage in conversation with the program staff, conduct a site visit and speak with other parents whose children attend or have attended the program.

People

Who will bring the program to life? Is there diversity (racial, ethnic, socio-economic, learning/physical abilities, gender, family) represented in the students and faculty? What is the communication like between school and families? Are there support service personnel available if needed?

Early childhood educators are an amazing group of people ready to nurture a childโ€™s whole self. Find out about the community that will welcome and support your child.
