HOLYOKE — The Lyman Street Bridge over the city’s first level canal has closed to traffic and will not reopen until at least fall 2021.
The long-term closure is part of the next phase of a Massachusetts Department of Transportation project to remove and reconstruct the existing bridge. The $6.6 million project, being completed by the firm New England Infrastructure, will make improvements to Lyman Street from its intersections with Front Street and Canal/Main Street.
“During this period, through traffic heading towards Canal/Main Street will be detoured on to Maple Street, and traffic from Canal/Main Street to Lyman Street will be detoured on to Race Street and Dwight Street,” the city announced Thursday. “Lyman Street will remain open to local traffic at both ends and a temporary bridge has been installed to allow pedestrians to cross the canal.”
Traffic signals at the Lyman Street and Canal/Main Street intersection have been modified, and between that intersection and Bowers Street only one-way traffic will be allowed.
