I am writing to explain why I support the proposed Proposition 2½ override. Do I have a lot of money and can afford any tax increases? No. Do I think the Northampton city government is squandering away the money from the last override? No.
I believe that the city government has used the money from the last override so wisely that it lasted much longer than it was supposed to last.
Why do we need another override? Because the state’s formula for funding city services is so flawed that an override is absolutely needed so that we can have good schools, responsive and top-notch fire and police departments, a Department of Public Works that plows and paves and allows us all to travel through our city and other services that none of us can live without.
The increase in our taxes is small compared to the huge loss we would all suffer if our city departments couldn’t serve us as they do.
Please support the proposed override.
