Benjamin Howe, Simon LaClair and the 4×800-meter relay won championships as the Northampton boys indoor track & field team finished second at the state Division 4 meet, Saturday in Boston.
The Blue Devils finished with 42 points. Weston was first with 46 at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center.
Weston solidified the title with a victory in the closing 4×400 relay. Northampton, which pieced together a relay due to illnesses, was eighth in the event.
“It was within their grasp,” Northampton coach Linda Rowbotham said. “We just didn’t have enough oomph in the end. The guys should be happy and proud.”
Howe finished first in the 1,000 by just over a second in 2 minutes, 35.42 seconds. Teammate Lars Sippel was sixth (2:39.97).
LaClair took home the mile by just under a second in 4:24.75.
Tobias L’Esperance, who missed most of last week with an illness, finished second in the 2-mile in 9:39.61.
Howe, Sippel, L’Esperance and LaClair teamed in the 4×800 and won in 8:22.62, nearly 12 seconds ahead of second-place Quabbin.
Walter Tebbetts, of Amherst Regional, was eighth in the 2-mile in 10:00.45. He grabbed the Hurricanes’ only point in the meet.
In the girls championship, Amherst Regional tied for eighth with 24 points. Northampton was 12th (14). Nauset was first with 51.
The Hurricanes were led by a strong performance by senior Isabela Shepard. She placed first in the 600 in 1:38.7, edging Medfield’s Olivia Tomlin (1:38.84).
Danielle Beason, Anajisa Robinson, Juliana Shepard and Isabela Shepard won the 4×400 (4:07.99) relay, with Isabela chasing down Nauset’s anchor Monique Malcolm on the final lap.
“She’s been working really hard,” Amherst coach David Thompson said. “I expected her to do nothing less.”
Beason, Robinson, Eunseo Ryu and Isabela Shepard placed sixth in the 4×200 (1:50.02). Robinson was eighth in the 300 (42.94).
Mary Yount led the Blue Devils. The senior placed third in the mile in 5:23.9 and anchored the second-place 4×800.
The relay of Maggie Reade, Lila Lofying, Adele Jordan and Yount finished in 10:13.08. Melrose won in 10:11.84.
“I think the best is yet to come,” Rowbotham said of Yount. “She easily secured that third spot and she wanted to save some for the 4×8. It paid off.”
