The Granby girls basketball team jumped on Mount Greylock in the first then weathered a third-quarter letdown to roll into the Western Massachusetts Division 3 Tournament quarterfinals.
Nora Young had 30 points as the sixth-seeded Rams advanced through the first round with a 57-35 win over the No. 11 Mounties, Monday in Granby.
Kaeleigh Croteau hit four 3-pointers and scored all her 14 points in the first half as Granby took a 34-9 halftime lead. Young added 16 points, fighting through constant double and triple teams in the first half, but it wasnโt just those two seniors.
Classmate Julia Frappier was a force inside on both ends as Granby took control
โWe really played a great first half,โ Granby coach Tom Burke said. โJulia Frappier, who did not score, in the first half had nine rebounds, five offensive. … We were really aggressive and kids were getting after rebounds. We didnโt give them one offensive rebound.โ
Greylock outscored the Rams 17-3 in the third quarter to pull within 37-26 entering the final quarter. However, Young buried 3-pointers on the Ramsโ first two possessions to quash any momentum Greylock (10-11) was building.
โThey made a good run at us,โ Burke said.
Granby will play at No. 3 Hoosac Valley (14-6) at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
Ware 42, Gateway Regional 17 โ Peyton Bucko had six points and Grace Van Buren added five for the 15th-seeded Gators (10-11), who fell on the road to the second-seeded Indians (16-5) in the first round of the Division 4 tournament.
