■The trustees of the University of Massachusetts yesterday named Provost Oswald Tippo to be chancellor of the Amherst branch, despite objections raised by about fifty students who attended the meeting. Tippo will assume his duties as chancellor immediately.

■Two Northampton police officers became cowboys for fifteen minute this morning when a report was received that two horses were on the loose on Orchard St. Officers John Dunn and Charles Dunning lassoed the two wandering creatures and returned them to the “old corral” on Woodmont Road.

■A handwritten sign in the front window of Midway Electric on King St. says the store is “closed for inventory.” What the sign does not say is that the 33-year-old lamp, lighting and wholesale electrical supply business will not reopen.

■After three years and many sleepless nights, Larry Alphen’s anxieties about the future of his business ended Tuesday. Alphen, owner of Mail Boxes Etc. on Pleasant St., was the high bidder at an auction for the condo in which his business is located.

■About 450 people, from parents and teachers to students and community members, gathered at South Hadley High School last night to begin discussing ways to promote more civil and ethical behavior among students and the community at large.

■Greater Easthampton Junior Miss Danielle Glenn took her “Fame” to the state level Saturday and went home with a $1,600 scholarship, placing third all around in the contest. She earned the second-runner up title as well as awards in talent, self-expression and fitness categories.
