Vashnie Perry finished with 18 points and five steals as the UMass women’s basketball team beat Saint Joseph’s, 51-47, in Philadelphia on Wednesday.
The Minutewomen (18-10, 8-7 Atlantic 10) trailed 18-16 at halftime, but outscored the Hawks 20-9 in the third quarter. Saint Joseph’s (9-18, 3-12) cut the deficit to six twice in the fourth quarter – once early and once late – but UMass held on.
Sam Breen had 11 points and 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double on the season. It’s her second straight double-double and third in the last four games.
Hailey Leidel had 10 points in the win.
Mount Holyoke 17, Western New England 16 — The Lyons held the lead for most of the game until the Golden Bears outscored the hosts 6-1 in the second half to take a 15-14 lead with about 10 minutes left.
Julianna Rankin, Meryl Phair and Caroline Flynn each scored in the final seven minutes to lift Mount Holyoke (2-0).
Abby Baldwin (Florence) had five goals and two assists for the Lyons. Allie Brown and Flynn each had four goals.
Worcester State 10, Smith 6 — Bryn Murray scored three goals, while Kaitlin Chiu had two and Bella Ferraro one for the Pioneers (0-1).
