Seconds after Middlebury tied the game, Emma Flynn gave Amherst College the lead and the Mammoths made it stand in a 2-1 victory in the NESCAC Women’s Hockey Tournament championship, Sunday.
Kaitlin Hoang gave Amherst a 1-0 lead 2 minutes, 27 seconds into the third period in Middlebury, Vermont. Rose Mroczka and Leslie Schwartz each had an assist on the play.
Maddie Leidt tied the game at 6:07 for the Panthers (21-3-3), but 13 seconds later Flynn struck for the winning goal.
Anne Malloy had an assist on the tally for Amherst (17-5-5), which earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with the title.
Caitlin Walker (16-5-5) made 25 saves for the win.
Hoang broke a tie in the third period and Carley Daly added an empty-netter as the Mammoths beat Colby, 3-1, in the semifinals on Saturday. Flynn also scored, while Walker made 28 saves.
Hobart 62, Springfield 61 — The 17th-ranked Pride (23-5) saw its season come to end at home on Saturday in the NCAA Division III Tournament second round.
Senior Jake Ross (Northampton) registered a game-high 29 points and pulled down nine boards to become the first men’s player in Division III history to reach 2,500 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career.
Amherst 12, Babson 3 — Claire Dunbar had four goals, while Dani DiTommaso and Maia Noyes each had two for the visiting Mammoths (3-1) on Sunday.
Tufts 9, Amherst 7 — The second-ranked Jumbos (3-0) outscored the Mammoths (2-1) 6-1 in the second half to win Saturday at Pratt Field.
Dunbar, Sydney Larsen and Hannah Gustafson each had two goals for Amherst.
Smith 16, Gordon 0 — Reese Gittelman (three), Bella Ferraro (three), Kaitlin Chiu (two), Bella DeAngelo (two) and Stella Alphas (two) each scored multiple goals as the Pioneers (2-2) cruised at home on Saturday.
UMass 18, UConn 14 — The Minutewomen outscored the Huskies 7-4 over the final 21:19 minutes to win on the road, Saturday.
Kelly Marra had five goals, while Stephanie Croke added four for UMass (4-1). Olivia Muscella chipped in three goals.
Iowa State 3, UMass 1; UMass 14, South Florida 5 — Kendra Allen homered in both games, while Kristina Day and Alyssa Lyon (three RBIs) each had three hits in the victory for UMass (4-6), Saturday in Tampa, Florida.
Wisconsin 9, UMass 0 — Juliana Shields had two of the three hits for the Minutewomen (4-7) in the shutout, Sunday in Tampa, Florida.
Georgia 16, UMass 2; Georgia 6, UMass 0 — Jordan Erbe had two hits in each game, but the Bulldogs completed the sweep of the Minutemen (1-8) with the shutout on Sunday.
ECAC Championships — UMass senior Emilie Cowan won the 500 meter title, Sunday at Boston University.
Connecticut College 7, Mount Holyoke 2 — Catherine Peabody and Anya Gerasimova won their doubles match, while Peabody won at singles for the visiting Lyons (2-3), Sunday.
Men’s lacrosse
Tufts 25, Amherst 15 — Matt Solberg had four goals, while Colin Minicus added three, but the Mammoths (2-1) fell on the road on Saturday.
