HADLEY — Hampshire Mall is closing at 8 p.m. Thursday as a response to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic.
Mall owner Pyramid Management Corp. of Syracuse, New York, announced Thursday that the Route 9 site, along with the Kingston Collection mall in Kingston, would have their interior portions closed.
“We are in unprecedented times and this decision is the direct result of the presence of the coronavirus in the communities we serve,” Stephen Congel, chief executive officer for Pyramid, said in a statement. “We are committed to further enhance community mitigation and reduce density for the greater good of our community, tenants, guests and employees.”
Several of the mall’s tenants have been closed or have adjusted their operations, including restaurants, Planet Fitness and the Cinemark movie theaters.
Prohibiting people from the corridors doesn’t affect stores that have exterior entrances, meaning Target, PetSmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, JC Penney and Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts could all remain open.
The decision to close the mall comes two days after Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse ordered the closure of the Holyoke Mall at Ingleside. In addition, Pyramid-owned malls in New York have been closed by order of the state government.
