Grocery stores have long been considered a community hub. Grocery store workers learn their customers’ names, inquire about families and offer smiles when shoppers might be feeling down.

Yes, grocery stores are remaining open, but, understand that they are open for the esssentials. Please do not think that since the grocery store is open, it is a nice place to go for a break in your isolation. Grocery store workers are risking their and their families’ health to keep the store open.

The model of running to the grocery store every day for quick items has to change. Talk to neighbors, maybe one person can go with a list for three households. It is far better than three of you going separately – or even as a group. Change up your meals, be flexible and shop for a weeks’ worth of groceries. Ask for help if you can’t carry that to the car or into your home.

If you are in a grocery store, please be patient, maintain physical distance and be quick. Do not hoard – there is no shortage of food – trucks are still delivering everyday.

Heed the Centers for Disease Control warnings, if you are immune-compromised or experiencing symptoms, please do not enter grocery stores. Ask others to shop for you. Consider take out, local restaurants need your support and many are offering curbside pick-up. We are in this together.
