■Troop 334 at Leeds, one of the newest and largest Junior Girl Scout Troops in the Northampton area, awarded badges Monday at 7 p.m. at Leeds Elementary School auditorium. The awards ceremony was followed by a movie on Girl Scout camping and a discussion period led by Miss Caroline Emmons, Girl Scout field director.

■Airman David D. McConkey is spending a 14-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. E. McConkey of 418 Ryan Road, after completing aircraft electronics school at Chanute Air Force Base, Ill. He will report to Cannon AFB, New Mexico for further schooling.

■The Price Chopper Corp. announced today that it is closing its two supermarkets in Hampshire County one on King Street in Northampton, the other on University Drive in Amherst. The two stores will shut their doors May 21.

■The Plainfield Fire Department has rewarded with a promotion the efforts of a firefighter who pursued extensive training in firefighting, medical services and rescue techniques. Merton Taylor Jr., 24, was promoted from firefighter to lieutenant last month, according to Fire Chief Dennis Thatcher.

■Strength in numbers is the motivation behind a new alliance between the Hilltown Land Trust and the Trustees of Reservations, two conservation organizations that work to preserve land in the Hilltowns. The partnership will allow both non-profits to accelerate land conservation in the Hilltowns.

■A $1.68 million Proposition 2½ override to help fund school, town and library programs passed with overwhelming support from Amherst voters Tuesday. Supporters of the override let out cheers when the final numbers displayed a decisive victory for their side and a sweep of all 10 precincts.
