NORTHAMPTON — An Easthampton man was arrested for alleged drunken driving Thursday after another person was left in critical condition when he allegedly struck his head after falling off the trunk of the man’s moving car, according to city police.
Northampton Police Chief Jody Kasper wrote in a post on the department’s Facebook page Friday that the city’s police and fire departments responded to 168 Industrial Drive at 2:56 p.m. for a report of an injured male. Officers arrived and found the man receiving CPR on the ground; city emergency personnel arrived and rendered aid, she said.
The injured man was transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield and was in critical condition as of Friday morning, she said.
Kasper wrote that investigating officers determined that the male had reportedly been sitting on the trunk of a car as it was traveling through a parking lot before he fell off and struck his head.
The driver of the car, a 27-year-old Easthampton man, was on scene and arrested on a charge of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of liquor causing serious bodily injury, Kasper wrote.
The Northampton Police Department’s Crime Scene Services Unit and the detective bureau responded. The incident is still under police investigation, Kasper wrote.
