■Undaunted by the rain, protected by foul-weather gear and using all sorts of lures, despite the high water, over 200 youngsters caught a large number of trout during the fishing derby sponsored by the local Elks Club on Sunday. Both sides of the pond in front of the V.A. Hospital in Leeds were lined by participants and their families.

■Open house was held at the Pro Brush Company’s new building in Florence Saturday and area officials, business and civic leaders were taken on a tour of the $1.4 million plant. It was pointed out during the tour that Pro Brush accounts for 18 percent of the toothbrush market in the nation.

■Although the Northampton City Council seems poised to pass a proposed domestic partnership ordinance, opponents last night began planning strategies to defeat the measure. About 70 people gathered at the Christian Life Center on King Street to focus on placing a referendum question on the November ballot.

■Choosing to cut losses and concentrate on his primary business, restaurateur Martin Carrera says he will close his year-old burger eatery, the Graffiti Grill at 44 Main St. The closing comes as Carrera plans to revamp and “perfect” his Mexican restaurant, La Veracruzana, at 31 Main St.

■A Longmeadow developer says he will sink more than $1 million into renovating a former factory building that has been vacant for several years on Pleasant Street in Easthampton, with plans to construct up to 10 live-work units for artists, retail space, office space and light industrial manufacturing space.

■The Summit House, the historic 19th-century hotel perched atop mount Holyoke, will be closed this summer, Department of Conservation and Recreation officials said Monday. The building’s porch is in need of repair and presents potential public safety concerns, said Wendy Fox, DCR press secretary.
