NORTHAMPTON — The 24-hour emergency shelter at Northampton High School will be closing this month, Mayor David Narkewicz announced Tuesday.
The temporary shelter opened on April 1 while the Grove Street Inn and the Interfaith Shelter — downtown shelters run by ServiceNet — both closed because it wasn’t possible to properly social distance there.
On May 23, the city “will transition operations from the emergency shelter at Northampton High School (NHS) back to existing local facilities,” a statement from the mayor’s office said.
“We are working closely with the city to plan a safe transition as we close the shelter at NHS,” said Sue Stubbs, executive director of ServiceNet, in the city’s statement.
Said Narkewicz: “We have learned a lot and will be ready to move quickly should the need arise to reopen a shelter.”
