DEERFIELD — Massachusetts State Police and local first responders were called to assist at a brush fire in the area of Stillwater and Mathews roads on Thursday.
The roughly 30-acre fire was mostly contained as of Thursday afternoon, according to Deerfield Police Sgt. Adam Sokoloski. No injuries were reported, and no structures were threatened.
The cause of the fire had not been determined as of Thursday afternoon.
South Deerfield and Conway fire departments, and Department of Conversation and Recreation District 9 Fire Warden Phil Gilmore initially responded to a report of smoke in the area of Stillwater and Mathews roads at 9 a.m. on Thursday.
After realizing there was a significant amount of smoke, Massachusetts State Police helicopters were requested to survey the area. Additional crews from Franklin and Hampshire counties were also requested.
Sokoloski said because the area is inaccessible by truck, firefighters were brought in by UTVs and ATVs, and by foot in the rugged terrain.
“It’s rather labor-intensive,” he said.
Helicopters were fitted with “Bambi Buckets” to drop water on the fire. Northampton Fire Rescue was also requested to assist.
Shutesbury resident Russ Mizula, who said he owns the land that has been affected, said he was alerted to the fire by a friend. He said the land has been open for people who want to use the trails.
“I’m very pleased to see the response of fire patrols that are on it,” Mizula said.
