NORTHAMPTON — Asparagus, rhubarb and other spring bounty have been growing in the Valley, but farmers markets got off to a less showy start this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The city’s Health Department limits what can be sold at markets and has put in place safety precautions, including occupancy limits and designated entrances and exits.

Plants, honey and produce were on display Wednesday at the Florence Farmers Market, the second one of the season.

The Northampton Farmers Market, held Saturdays downtown, and the Tuesday Market, run by Grow Food Northampton, both opened in earlier this month.

Elsewhere, the Amherst Farmers Market is set to open Saturday on the Town Common. In Holyoke, the farmers market is set to open June 18 in Veterans Memorial Park, the organization recently wrote on its Facebook page.
