■The University of Massachusetts is returning to normal today after the departure of delegates, candidates, staff and press from the 1970 Democratic state convention. The candidacies of Senate President Maurice A. Donahue of Holyoke for governor and Rep. Michael Dukakis of Brookline as lieutenant governor have been endorsed by the convention.

■ “It is time to come together and put our own house in order,” said U.S. Rep. Silvio O. Conte at Flag Day exercises last night on the grounds of the Hatfield Memorial Town Hall. The impressive program was sponsored by the Northampton Lodge of Elks, and Exalted Ruler Robert L. Tatro was master of ceremonies.

■One of the two automatic doors in the Masonic Street Fire Station jammed when it was halfway closed last night, blocking the path of two fire trucks for nearly 40 minutes. Northampton Deputy Fire Chief Edward Passa said firefighters were closing the door at about 11 p.m. when it seized.

■Approximately 30 percent of freshmen admitted to the state’s public colleges last September were exempted from minimum admission standards so the schools could fill classrooms, a report says. “We’ve comprised quality,” said state Chancellor of Higher Education Stanley Koplik, who commissioned the study.

■The Rev. Gary Dailey, 50, who has been the Springfield Diocese’s vocation director since 2004, will assume directorship of the Newman Center at the University of Massachusetts on July 1. Dailey will continue in his role as vocation director while he is at the Newman Center.

■Cooley Dickinson Hospital doctors and nurses say they are dismayed about a possible affiliation effort being considered by the hospital. Cooley Dickinson President and CEO Craig N. Melin confirmed Monday the hospital began eyeing the option of affiliating or forming a partnership with another hospital last summer.
