SOUTH DEERFIELD — In a Frontier Regional School District School Committee meeting last week, Superintendent Darius Modestow updated committee members on the reopening plan for the fall.

“Opening in the fall is still up in the air with what that’s going to look like, but we have to start planning based on what we do know,” he said.

Modestow told the School Committee he anticipates smaller class sizes and blended models of learning, with some learning taking place at home and some taking place in the classroom. He also said the district may need to prepare for an all-remote learning scenario.

With school buildings having been closed since March as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, a number of committees have been organized to oversee the various aspects of returning to school.

Modestow aid the school will work from the guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which are the same guidelines the state is following.

There will be prescriptive mandates regarding what will need to be in place for schools to open, Modestow said, but ultimately the district’s plan must be approved by the School Committee.

Looking forward, he anticipates the district presenting a plan to the School Committee on July 16, which would then be voted on at the July 23 meeting.

The School Committee, meanwhile, approved setting Aug. 27 as the start date for the 2020-21 school year.
