The decision by UMass Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy to welcome back thousands of students to campus in the fall is extremely foolish and short-sighted.

Massachusetts is on track to contain COVID-19, but bringing back scores of 18- to 22-year-old students who will not adhere to strict safety guidelines puts the town of Amherst and the Pioneer Valley at risk for a surge in COVID1-9 cases.

Ignoring public safety and health of surrounding towns is irresponsible and blatantly financially motivated. They should reconsider for the sake of local public health.
