■Charles Jasinski of the Smith FFA Chapter at Smith’s Vocational High School attended a National Future Farmers of America Leadership and Citizenship Conference in Washington, D.C., last week. Jasinski, 16, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Jasinski of Northampton.

■Thomas R. Heafey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert T. Heafey, 392 South St., Northampton, has been promoted to staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. A 1965 graduate of St. Michael’s High School, he attended North Adams State College and is a member of Kappa Delta Phil.

■Nearly 500 shirts hung from makeshift clotheslines in front of the Neilson Library at Smith College yesterday, virtually filling the expanse of lawn that is the heart of the campus. The Clothesline Project was an exhibit commemorating the victims and survivors of all forms of violence against women.

■Going from Hot Shots to espresso shots, a long-dormant sports bar on Pleasant Street will reopen in September as Club Metro, a nightclub with a caffeine twist. Two former Springfield businessmen, Kevin and Michael Zeller, have purchased the former Hot Shots, located above a car wash.

■Jake’s, a Northampton fixture since 1978, is changing hands after 25 years under the ownership of Danny Workman. The new proprietor, Melissa Flynn Brunt of Easthampton, is a longtime customer who says few changes are in store for the popular city eatery.

■In an emergency re-do, the Northampton City Council approved a newly worded debt-exclusion override ballot question that would authorize an increase in property taxes to pay for a new police station. The unanimous vote was the second go around for the council after the state Elections Division found problems with language in an earlier ballot question approved by the council.
