The Frontier Sandy Koufax baseball team won its first game of the season in stunning fashion on Sunday, beating Brattleboro (1-4) 13-12 after a walk-off single in Pioneer Valley Youth Baseball League action at Herlihy Park in Whately.
Frontier squandered a 9-6 lead in the top of the seventh inning, as Brattleboro scored 6 runs to take a 12-9 advantage going into the bottom of the frame.
With two outs, Frontier put together a barrage of on-base appearances through walks, errors and hit batters. After Davey Mazur tied the score with a single, Gabe Solodky followed suit and knocked home the winning run with a walk-off RBI single.
Owen Babb pitched all seven innings and struck out 10 for Frontier, grabbing the win and bringing the team to 1-2 on the season. Mazur recorded three hits and 2 RBIs, including a double. Brayden McDonough drove in three runs.
Amherst 13, Northampton 1 — The Amherst Sandy Koufax team continued their strong opening run to the season Saturday by putting up 13 runs in 5 innings and allowing only 2 hits. Amherst improved to 3-1 on the year, while Northampton fell to 1-3.
Amherst 11, Frontier 3 — Amherst Sandy Koufax beat Frontier handily on Friday racking up 10 runs between the fourth and fifth inning.
Greenfield vs Northampton at Florence Field, previously scheduled for Sunday, has been postponed.
The Frontier Mickey Mantle team dominated West County on Sunday evening, improving its record to 5-1 on the season. West County dropped to a 3-2 record.
Tyler Baranowski recorded the win for Frontier, pitching a complete game and striking out six. Kevin Baumann hit two singles and knocked in two runs. Ben Zaranek hit a single and also recorded two RBIs.
Northampton 14, Brattleboro 7 — Northampton Mickey Mantle broke its hitting slump and recorded the team’s first win of the season against Brattleboro in Vermont on Saturday.
Despite giving up 5 runs in the first inning, pitchers Cyril Rees-Burton and Marshall Ingram stalled the Brattleboro offense for the rest of the game, allowing only 2 runs from the second inning onward.
The Northampton offense, meanwhile, flourished early and often. Peter Sullivan led the team, going 4-5 and scoring 2 runs. Rees-Burton went 3-3, drawing a walk and scoring 3 runs.
Northampton improved to 1-3 on the year, while Brattleboro remained winless at 0-5.
Hatfield 5, Frontier 3 — Frontier Mickey Mantle dropped its first game of the season against Hatfield in Deerfield on Friday.
Starting Hatfield pitcher Griffin Smiarowski pitched 6 ⅔ innings and recorded the win, striking out 4 and giving up 3 runs and 8 hits in that span.
Frontier tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth inning, but a two-run double by Smiarowski at the top of the sixth put Hatfield ahead, and Frontier didn’t have anything left in the tank.
Frontier is now 5-1 on the year, while Hatfield improved to 3-1.
Northampton 1, Easthampton 0 – The Northampton Arcanums improved to 3-2 Saturday with a narrow victory over Easthampton.
Jake Brittain pitched a complete game, allowing only 4 hits and striking out 5 as he picked up the win.
Easthampton’s Isiah Colon also pitched a stellar game, striking out 8 and giving up what would be the lone and winning run in the first inning due to a wild pitch.
