■Construction continues on the 28-story University of Massachusetts library on the Amherst campus. The massive structure is to be the highest building in Massachusetts west of Worcester.
■The Crystal Spring Daily Bar at the intersection of Florence and Haydenville roads was ordered evacuated at 8:11 last night after a telephone call reporting a bomb set to go off there was received by the owner. John Rainville evacuated the building and called Northampton police who in turn summoned firefighters.
■U.S. Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt visited the Silvio Conte Anadromous Fish Research Center in Turners Falls yesterday. Babbitt was on a three-day van tour of environmental programs in New England, trying to pull the environmental debate out of the back rooms of Washington and into the public eye.
■The Hampshire Regional YMCA bought out its neighbor last week, purchasing a house at 278 Prospect St. for its future expansion. The house, which dates from about 1900 and is divided into four separate one-bedroom apartments, does not fit into the “Y” plans and is being demolished.
■A dozen Massachusetts mayors wrote to House Speaker Robert DeLeo on Tuesday to voice their support for his expanded gambling plan that includes adding slot machines at the state’s racetracks. The mayors said slots would provide up to $100 million in immediate aid for cities and towns.
■The blight that devastated tomato plants in the Pioneer Valley last summer has been found on a farm in Hadley, according to vegetable specialist Ruth Hazzard. The farm has plowed under the tomato crop in an attempt to prevent the blight from spreading, said Hazzard, who works for UMass Extension.
