■Clarence S. “Bill” Potvin is the new owner of Ziff’s Package Store at 44 Main St., Northampton. Mrs. Esther Ziff of 62 West St., who has operated the business for 18 years, sold it Tuesday.
■U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy led a group of family members on their annual summer tour of western Massachusetts. The Kennedy entourage stopped at Yankee Candle Co. in Deerfield where the senator signed autographs before having lunch.
■The former Lobster Pot in Whately could reopen as early as next month as an Italian restaurant. Salvatore DiMaio and his son Anthony DiMaio, owners of DiMaio’s Family Pizza and Luncheonette in South Deerfield, have purchased the property and plan to call the new restaurant Villa DiMaio.
■Thieves who broke into MurDuff’s Jewelry on Main Street in Florence early Wednesday morning didn’t get away with much jewelry, owner Christine Brazeau said, but they caused significant property damage. Brazeau said MurDuff’s will be closed at least until Friday while the business is cleaned up and glass is replaced.
■Hilltown residents can expect to see a lot of traffic of the two-wheeled variety on Saturday, when an estimated 450 cyclists will take to the streets for the Northampton Cycling Club’s 12th annual Tour of the Hilltowns Bicycle Race.
